About the test
The G1 test is the first step in Ontario’s graduated licensing system — a written knowledge test covering road signs and the rules of the road. It has 40 questions split into two sections, 20 each, and you need 16 correct (80%) on both sections to pass.

Why: A stop sign requires a complete stop every time, regardless of visible traffic — at the stop line if marked, or the crosswalk, sidewalk edge, or intersection edge if not. You then wait until the way is fully clear before entering.
Why: The winding road sign shows a series of S-shaped curves, warning drivers that the road ahead changes direction repeatedly rather than having just a single bend.
Why: Orange diamond signs mark temporary conditions like road work; this one gives drivers advance notice that construction work begins one kilometre ahead, so they have time to slow down and prepare.
Why: Green rectangular signs with white lettering are Ontario's information and direction signs. They tell drivers about distances and destinations, while other colours are used for facility, service and attraction signs.
Why: A yellow light means the red light is about to appear. You must stop if you can do so safely; if you cannot stop safely, proceed through with caution.
Why: Pedestrian signals help pedestrians cross at intersections with traffic lights. The white walking symbol means pedestrians may cross; a flashing or steady orange hand means they must not begin to cross.
